P. A free-growing fern of deep green colour, well suited for growing in copse or on banks where it can have some shade from the sun. The smaller kinds are useful for the wall garden. The lady fern is the true spleenwort. A good fern for decoration in a room is bulbiferum: fiaccidum is graceful in a hanging basket. The maidenhair spleenwort is Trichomanes and can be grown in the open. The bird’s nest fern, nidus, is a specimen for the hothouse. The shield ferns are classed as Aspidium. They like coolness and moisture and a soil mostly composed of leaf mould and peat.
