STACHYS

P. This genus includes theChinese artichoke —see ARTICHOKE. Stachys lanata is lamb’s ear, lamb’s tongue or donkey’s ears. It is a useful border plant, preferring light, dry soil and easily increased by division in spring or early autumn. The small purplish flowers appear on a 15 in. plant in summer but are unimportant. The chief attraction is the dense, white, woolly foliage. Stachys (Betonica) grandiflora or Stachys macrantha bears pinkish-lilac flowers from June to August on a 2 ½ ft. plant. It is a restful colour and a pleasing contrast to other plants in bloom at the same time. Increase by division in spring.
