SYNTHYRIS

Attractive rockery plants for a semi-shady position. Work in plenty of leaf mould, peat, compost orsimilar moisture-retaining material. They bloom over a long period in spring and are increased by division after flowering. Synthyris reniformis cordata (Sweetzeri) has rounded, shining leaves, crinkled at the edges, and dark blue, bell-shaped flowers on short spikes. It reaches 4 in. S. plantaginea is later and rather taller to about 8 in., with lilac-blue flowers.
