FLOWERING SHRUB. Also known as Criniodendron hookerianum, this gorgeous evergreen shrub is only hardy in really mild districts. Elsewhere it should be planted against a south or southwest wall. It sometimes succeeds on an east-facing wall but must have a sheltered position and a warm, lime-free soil. The hanging flowers resemble crimson lanterns, and are borne in profusion along the branches in early summer. Mulch with damp peat etc. in dry weather. Increase by cuttings of half-ripe shoots in August.
