Vriesia hieroglyphica

This Vriesia acquired its specific name because of the dark, horizontal markings on the leaves. It is native to Brazil.

The leaf rosettes are extraordinarily large, more than 1 m (39 in) across. The individual leaves are very stiff, about 50 cm (20 in) long and 10 cm (4 in) wide. The inflorescences are also big, 60-80 cm (24-32 inch) long, and composed of separate spikes. The bracts, up to 3 cm (1 inch) long, are yellow-green. The yellow flowers are two-ranked at first; later they bend to one side. They are about 6 cm (2.5 inch) long.
