P. Candida, sometimes called the flower of the west wind, is a tricky bulb but worth very careful attention. It demands a sunny position and light, well-drained yet moist soil. Plant at the foot of a greenhouse wall and enrich the soil with plenty of damp peat, leaf , mould etc. The white crocus-like flowers appear in late summer on a 6 in. plant. Increase by division in spring but do not disturb unnecessarily.
