Care Instructions:

These cacti form tight clusters of globular stems, each studded with small ribs or tubercles and capped with tiny spines. Rebutia minuscula bursts into crimson funnels; R. deminuta features fiery orange-red blooms; R. aureiflora shows sunny golden flowers; and R. salmonea offers delicate salmon-pink tones. Their flowers emerge from the base, forming colorful rings around the stem tops, making them a popular favorite in collections.

Light

Rebutia prefers bright light to full sun. Some varieties enjoy a bit of afternoon shade, especially in very hot climates.

Water

Water thoroughly during the growing season (spring to summer), allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter when the plant is dormant—just enough to prevent shriveling.

Soil

Use a well-draining cactus mix with extra sand or perlite. Avoid compact or water-retentive soils to prevent root rot.

Temperature

These cacti enjoy warm temperatures in the growing season and cooler ones in winter. They can tolerate temperatures down to −7 °C (20 °F) if kept dry.

Humidity

Low humidity is best. Make sure air circulates freely around the plant to avoid fungal problems.

Fertilizer

Feed lightly with a diluted cactus fertilizer once a month in spring and summer. Do not fertilize in fall or winter.

Placement Ideas

Perfect for sunny windowsills, mixed cactus bowls, or small containers. They also suit outdoor rock gardens in warm, dry climates.

Common Issues

  • Overwatering can lead to root rot
  • Sunburn from sudden full-sun exposure
  • Pests like mealybugs or spider mites may hide in dense clusters

Things to Watch Out For

  • Let the soil dry out completely before watering again
  • Avoid water sitting at the base of the plant
  • Transition to brighter light slowly to prevent sun damage

Propagation Tips

Rebutias produce lots of little offsets ("pups") that can be gently removed and replanted. Let the cut dry for a day or two before placing in soil. They can also be grown from seed.

Maintenance Tips

Remove spent blooms, check for pests regularly, and repot every couple of years to refresh the soil and encourage more offsets.

Did You Know?

Despite their tiny size, Rebutia flowers can be nearly as large as the plant’s body—producing spectacular circular crowns of blooms in spring.
