Rose Varieties and Their Habits
First let me state at once that the majority of roses grown in gardens are hybrids, that is to say they are the result of intermarriages arranged by the growers, between various rose species.

The Root Cap
With the naked eye, still better with a lens, a slight yellowish swelling is seen at each root-tip. This is the root-cap. It fits over the root as a thimble fits over a finger.

Storage of Food in Roots
Roots play yet another important part in the plant’s life-history, by receiving and storing food that has been made in the leaves. The roots that we use as food storage of contain the greatest store.

Large-Flowered Bush Roses (Hybrid Teas)
Average height is 21- to 3 ft., or as varied by conditions and cultivation. Adolf Horstmann Orange yellow marked red.

Large and Tall Indoor Plants
The position you choose for a tall plant will depend on whether you want to show it off on its own or to group it with others.

Time and Method of Pruning Roses
Pruning, as already stated, is done mainly at the end of March in the south, and beginning of April in the cold districts.

Easy to Grow Indoor Plants
There are many more indoor plants than the ones listed here, but these were chosen either because they are easy to grow, or because they offer the most attractive display.

Basic Types of Plants for Indoors
The majority will be permanent residents, and as long as the right conditions are provided they will remain elegant and attractive during the entire year.

Mealy-Cup Sage – Salvia Farinacea
To many gardeners, Salvia mean the bright scarlet spikes that are so popular in bedding and container schemes, but there are lots of much more subtle-coloured species and varieties in cultivation.

Russian Vine – Polygonum Baldschuanicum
Polygonum baldschuanicum, or Russian vine, is about the fastest-growing climber in captivity. It can put on 4.9m (16ft) in a season, and cover a small house in a couple of summers.

Sidalcea
There is something quite distinct about a plant which carries its flowers in spikes, and this is particularly so in the case of the sidalcea, which produces its colour just as the delphiniums are…

Tamarix Tamarisk
Tamarix is indigenous in the wastelands of southwest Europe, Mediterranean regions and Asia, and comprises about 90 species, of which only a few are sufficiently winter-hardy for this part of the…
